M. W. Thornhill Statue Fund

The Fifth St. CDC is leading an effort to have a statue of an outstanding Lynchburg citizen memorialized in the Fifth Street roundabout. We have concluded that Mr. M. W. Thornhill Jr. should be the subject of this recognition. Mr. Thornhill served as Lynchburg's first African American mayor, was a civil rights activist, effectively advocated for an enhanced black studies program in our schools, has mentored countless numbers of young men and women, and his family business has had a strong presence on Fifth Street for 70 years. The Thornhill family is supportive of this effort and is pleased that this recognition is being made. We need your help to make this happen. The cost of this endeavor will be $60,000. Please consider being a part of this community-wide effort by making a tax deductible contribution to the Fifth Street CDC, with attention to the M. W. Thornhill Jr. Statue Fund.
