The Fifth Street CDC is currently raising funds to commission a statue of the late M. W. Thornhill.

Mr. Thornhill served as Lynchburg's first African American mayor, was a civil rights activist, effectively advocated for an enhanced black studies program in our schools, has mentored countless numbers of young men and women, and his family business has had a strong presence on Fifth Street for 70 years.  We need your help to make this happen.

Our Donors

“The passing of Teedy Thornhill marks the loss of one who constantly sought for changes in our society, Not only did he provide support and resources for others, but he offered himself in public service. … I treasure our relationship and I know his memory will not fade and be folded into the dustbin of forgetfulness.”
— Former Virginia Governor Doug Wilder
